How much money should you need per month when travelling South America? Say Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil sticking to cheap hostels and not partying too hard.

Man you really got to be more specific if you want accurate help.
You could go to any of these countries any spend any some of money or spend very little depending on what you do. And of course each country is different or even each city.
I think that you could get by with spending very little.
A good estimate on a tight budget in my opinion would be $1,000usd to $1,400 usd Average of $30 to $50 usd a day.
$10-15 in accommodation. $5-10 in transportation, $2-5 in communication, and $10-20 in food. Things always come out more than you expect.

Obviously these countries are full of very poor people that 'get by' every day on close to nothing.. so you can make it on the same but it depends on you and what you want to do, you know?

You can always negotiate a little with every one and save handfuls in the end. But remember these people need the money too.

Pura Vida,

I guess I'm not too sure what I want to do. As long as I see some of Argentina and Brazil. I had save a lot of money but somehow seem to have blown most of it in Queenstown, New Zealand. So after flights to Santiago and then home from Rio to London I could only be left with £1000 to spend in S America and wondering how far this can get me. Unless of course I can save more in NZ which isn't easy.

Thanks for your help

What did you blow your money on in Queenstown?
I would seriously look into how you are spending your money and are you buying or doing things that are not necessary.

Ive visited both New Zealand and South America and both are amazing but i would never travel around South America knowing i couldnt full enjoy it because of lack of money.

And it all depends on what your plans are for South America and how long you are going to be there for

I wasn't going crazy with money in Queenstown but I stayed there too long in a house. Rent was cheap but I thought food shopping was expensive, bought a car which I hope to sell in Auckland and a fair bit of snowboarding and Spanish lessons twice a week, so it all added up. I spent a lot of time looking for design work and having interviews for jobs which I didn't get, should have worked in a bar or something to top up the bank account.
