I am a real novice to this travelling deal and wondered if anyone had any ideas or suggestions for me.
I land in Mumbai on 3 may 2009 and depart 24 June 2009.

What are your areas of interest ? I dont know which country you are from. Its just May is a very hot month so some of the cities need to be avoided around that time.
OOOPPPSS. Sorry I checked now and I saw you are from UK. I think I can suggest few places depending on your area of interest.
i find it quite over whelming as there is soo much to do - i do know that i want to experience a bit of the culture of india, spiritual constructs, beaches - is it better to head north or south for the months of may and june?
The months of May June and July are hot in india specially North India. If you can bear the heat then you can start from GOA which close to Mumbai and then move further north. Place for culture are wide spread in India. Closer to Mumbai is Madhya Pradesh which got few old culture caves and stuff.
Similar can be seen in World famous Ajanta/Alora caves again pretty close to Mumbai. If you move further then check Rajasthan which is full of cultural beauty, however Heat can be a point of concern.
