Hi all,

Just a quick one really to ask if May is a good time to fly out to Aus. From what i have read i understand that this time of year is basically the end of autum and the start of winter but is also the 'dry season' in the north of the country. I am looking to travel for about 12 months and just had enough of work and want to just take off and go as soon as possible but unsure if May is the best time of year to do it.

Do you recommend this time of year to travel and where in Aus do you suggest I go?? Is it a good idea to fly into Sydney at this time as i've always pictured myself arriving in Aus through Sydney, or do you suggest possibly going to somewhere such as Cairns first and then working my down the East coast??

Is it easy to find work around this time of year so that I can work over the winter months and then travel in summer??

Any help would be great.

At that time of year it's definitely getting into winter, but that doesn't mean its all rainy and cold for the whole country - Melbourne and Sydney definitely get winter weather, as does Tasmania, but other regions are still getting mild temperatures and sunny days. If you don't mind the winter you could head down to VIC and look for work in a ski resort. Or theres harvest work in different regions all year round, you could research into your options there a bit :)

Great time to travel, I started my trip in May in Sydney and went up the east coast. Good weather most of the time, lots of fellow travellers and lots of fun (check my pics), winter (jun-aug) is the best time to travel up north as it's not too hot, summer (dec-feb) is the wet season and there can be many road closures, this year there has been flooding in Cairns, Bowen, and the Barkley Highway (the main road east-west in the north) has been closed and parts of it washed away. I'd either be touring down south or staying in one location through summer.
