Let me assure you that Kenya is very safe, what you have to do is to avoid walking at night alone and going to crowded places, otherwise, welcome to Kenya the Land of opulence.
Female travel i Africa
I can't agree enough, definitely go. The less traveled destinations of East Africa were highlights of my RTW 2007 trip.
However, be extremely vigilant and trust your instincts. In some tourist towns, poverty and drug addiction have caused gangs to prey on vulnerable tourists (read about an incident that happened to two girls on my safari here) The story wasn't all bad though, our guide got their passports back and they partied in Dar es Salaam just fine.
Hi,
Its a great idea - you will definitely love it, the diversity of the three east african countrys is amazing from the cultures, the flora and fauna to the exciting attractions like Mt. Kilimanjaro, Maasai Mara e.t.c. What i would advice though is that you have a clear itinerary. Know what you are looking for and where to get it.

Hi, I am a 31 year old female and I am travelling alone through Africa.
I first have spent 2 weeks in Cameroon with a family, then flew over to Nairobi where I spent a week relaxing and updating my blog. After that I went on a 4 day safari to Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru. After a 4 day trip to Mount Kenya I took the bus with a friend from Nairobi to Mombasa where we spent 4 relaxing days in Watamu.
My friend had to go back to work but I will continue my trip through Africa. Well that is planned eventhough I am a little homesick since yesterday. There are not that many backpackers or they all going the other way around.
I am heading to Arusha/Moshi, from there to Dar Es Salaam, Zansibar, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and then back to Switzerland on July 10th. Most of the travel guides propose a route from South Africa to Tanzania, so it may be therefor and due to the different climates that I am on my own.
Enjoy, even if you are females. Don't let others frighten you, just be aware that there can be a risk. Don't carry all valuable belongings with you and split up where you keep them.
Just another advice, make sure you have a Visa, because Mastercard is not very popular here.
Have fun.
On my trip 3 wks ago, I met 2 girls who backpacked through a few countries in Africa (S. Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, etc). They did it independently sometimes and joined short organized tours at other times - depending on what they wanted to see/do in the area. They loved it. There were cities where they said not to walk around at night in but otherwise, it sounded like a great trip!
Just do the research, be safe and have a backup plan if any emergency arises or if you lose money, etc.
Good luck!
Hi,
I am a woman, now 42. I travel alone and been in Uganda, Mali, Zimbabwe. No agencies, just followed my nose. Travelled by local transport and had fun with local people. Usually was only white person in a bus and they all took good care of me.
So, go and have fun!
