I mentioned this in the Lima hostels thread just a minute ago, so thought I might as well 'formally' mention it here. We've activated Google Streetview on property pages. It kind of happened by accident actually, but having been live over 24 hours it seems to be bug free, so we'll leave it up

Right, first an example. Here's Wake Up hostel in Sydney. On the right, directly under the photos, you'll see a box which allows you to zoom around, up and down, or click on the arrows on the street to 'walk' up or down George Street. This should allow you to get a good idea of how a property looks from the outside, but also the neighbourhood, if that's something you might be wondering about. I don't know if it will be the kind of thing that makes or breaks a choice, but personally I think it's rather neat

The downside is that Google Streetview is not available for heaps of countries, mostly due to privacy legislation. I don't want to get into a discussion on privacy issues related to this, but the way we looked at it was that if it's available, we might as well add it here rather than make it more difficult for users to have to go off to Google to do something similar themselves. The countries I know it's available for right now are the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Italy, but there might very well be more. I know Google is adding them as quick as they can. Oh, and it will only show if a property is geo-located, but that's often the case in those same countries.

Please let us know what you think. Do you like it?

I just noticed it's also available for Paris, so dug up this listing on Wikipedia of where it is and isn't available.

Bless the Almighty Overlords!!!!!

Street View is helps a lot to actually SEE what a building looks like ahead of time rather than just mindlessly looking at addresses. People tend to process sights rather than numbers....maybe that's just around here...."So, you're lost eh? Well, you turn around, go back to where Old Homer's silo used to be....tornado took it down in '73.....turn right there, then go on down about 3 farms, until you get to the old chicken shack, then make a can't miss it"

Though Google may be working at controlling the world......this is a good feature. They even have our gravel road on the Street View.

Cool. Google Streetview should be launching for all major cities in the UK sometime this Spring.
