I think you are going to have to be a little more specific if you are going to receive some positive replies, sorry!

For starters, where are you from? Where abouts in the world do you wish to visit and how long for?

17 is pretty young to go out there on your own, but then that depends on you and your own maturity plus the destinations you plan to visit.

Try giving us a little (or a lot) more info and you will find the members here can be very helpful indeed

A lot. Usually at least 1000 USD for every month that you are gone plus the cost of flight tickets.

Through the Internet and guidebooks.

Plan ahead and make sure you have enough. You should have some emergency money stashed away with parents, relatives or friends who can get it to you in an emergency.

That number 1000 a month is a good solid number....But you CAN do it for less. It's just way less fun.

What are you interested in? You a sports guy? You like the beer? You like scuba diving? You love history? YOu want NOTHING but hot chicks? All these things colour (Canadian!) your decision. You gotta do sum a da werk!

I say the first trip should be someplace close, but still foreign. I think CA is a good bet. Europe is fantastich, but the penny it costs is very pretty.

If you really want to experience a (life changing) awesome journey you should go to Asia. I would focus on this continent. Countries like India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. You see things you have never seen before and you can't imagine how it is to be there if you have never been there. It changes your perspective on life when you come back in your western country. Besides, its really hard to finish your money there. You can easily come by with less then 500 euro per month (whilst staying in budget places ofcourse, see your lonely planet guidebook). Fly on Bangkok. It is a nice competitive line from anywhere in the world and fares are relatively cheap. From there continue your journey overland and just let the adventure guide you. People in Asia are extremely happy to help you out if you are in trouble. If you go for 3 months count on 1500 euro for daily transport, accomodation and food (low-budget). The return ticket London-Bangkok could be 900 euro or less. Offourse you should not forget to get vaccinations and a decent travelinsurance during the time you are away (that would cost approximately 300-500 euro). Also visas you have to arrange beforehand (check on the embassy site of the country where you are willing to go for tourist visa fares). Hope this helps. Goodluck!;)

PS: Also consider India (I have become addicted to that country).
