Has anyone travelled cross country in Costa Rica by train or know if it is even possible? freight hopping included?

If not and if anyone is up for finding out if it is possible I may be heading that way in a week or so from David in Panama.

Safe travels.

I would have said there is no train transport in Costa Rica, but then I started to google:

Rail Transport in Costa Rica

The only trains in Costa Rica are those between Heredia and San Jose and on the Caribbean side between Siquirres and Limon and Limon - Penshurst. The first one is commuter traffic, the other two only merchandize.
Some people have indeed travelled cross country by train, but that was before the tracks were destroyed in the 1991 earhquake.
From David (Panama), your only public transport is by bus. Interesting but long, due to time spent at the border crossing.:)

Oh, by the way, the Wikipedia article is not entirely correct. Needs updating.

Fraluchi is correct. Very little rail transport in Costa Rica and none to cross the country. The bus is OK going to David; I find the Caribbean side crossing at Sixaola-Guabito (?) more interesting and quicker than the crossing near David.
