Recession... sigh...
I'm lucky that I still got a job hanging in balance...
But I've decided to quit it by end of this year and have a career break doing something I really want.
People might say I'm stupid to quit with the current situation... but with my situation, living & working in the UK (world worst hit recession country!) It's a joke to continue to live & work here...
Imagine, standard of living is so high... even before you start spending your hard earned money, the government took a chunk away from it before you start spending the left over. Talking about 40% tax, it's ridiculous! On top of that, you pay expensive rental, on top of that you pay Council tax! Transportation (Tube/buses/trains) On top of that, the usual utilities bills (heat-gas/electricity/water/ Internet) where on top of that you add VAT!!! & ON TOP OF THAT you pay TV licence to watch those boring channels!

Even given you a good & an above average pay job, there're just too much to pay off. And it's normal when a person earn more, they tend to spend more, and this will only keep going up and eventually become a "commitments" to them.
Everyone will then have fear of losing their jobs, moreover you're talking about recession!

Lets look at the bright side, for once we "try" to let go these "temporary commitments" and let's do something we always wanted in life before it's too late. As it's for travelling ( where is why we are here in this forum ) I shall say, just do it! Afterall, we only live once... Good luck everyone! ;)

Hi jadeverell,

I'm in the similar situation with you... it's just that I'm currently working and residing in the UK, and somehow we (my wife and my self) wanna go home (Malaysia) to settle down... in dilemma now.

To answer the original post, the recession in itself has not affected my travel plans and if the UK had been part of the Eurozone all along, it wouldn't have done. What has affected my plans is the deliberate devaluation of the pound 'sterling' and my savings with it, as the British government is determined that the prudent shall bail out the profligate by inflating away the debt and destroying the currency in the process. Canada, where I have been twice, is off-limits due to the poor exchange rate, so is everywhere in the Eurozone. I could stay here in Blighty, but I feel the need to get away from the place for at least a few times a year to keep my sanity!
