myself and my friend are going to be travelling from Melbourne up to Cairns for approx 2 months, just wondering does anyone know would it be cheaper to get the bus and stay in hostels or hire a small campervan?
thanks a million!!!
also does anyone know approx how much money we would need for the two months? we will be planning on doing some dives and seeing all the sights, any answers/suggestions greatly appreciated!!

we're thinking of doing that too, we've decided that buying a car and a tent would be the best way tho cos you get to stop wherever you want and whenever you want!! plus if you really like somewhere you can stay an extra couple of days but with a planned trip you couldnt do it!!
and you dont need to pay for the travelling really cos you've got a car that you can sell onto someone else when your finished with it :) kinda like a savings fund haha!!

we're saving up just now and hope to have $5000 each for 2 months but we've not looked into how much things cost lol we're kinda just hoping for the best

I would def. recomend the campervan idea also! My boyfriend and I have the same idea. Driving from Brisbane to Cairns end of june. I did a rough draft and its going to cost us about 1000 each for 16 days. That includes fuel, campervan hire and park fees ( about 30 a night). We're bringing a tent as well for its been said there is excellent camping in the beaches. Hostels can be cheap, but keep in mind, you will still need transportation. As for us, we were opting for the privacy and freedom of the campervan, and after doing much much research and hostel pricing, i've concluded the campervan was our cheapest and best option.

Also, I've learned that its better to find a short term apartment or someone renting room in house than staying at hostels. It takes some researching, but... i've found this to save you heaps of money! Try checking out,, and Also, is an awesome sight where you can stay with a host family for FREE in exchange for a few hrs of your help.

Hope this was a bit helpful :O)
