The OP might not answer but the topic is still relevant to a lot of people;) It is interesting though that nearly a decade on there really isn't much of an alternative to DEET. Apart from Picardin I think the only new discovery is Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, though those products aren't easy to find and they tend to be more expensive :(

You can also take vitamin B1 which gives you an odor mosquitoes avoid. The main problem is most people can't stand the smell either so it doesn't do much for your social life. If malaria and dengue fever are problems where you visit, the smell might be worth it if you have serious allergies.

there are loads of "natural" "old wives' tales" and other cures... even the ones that "work" are not that effective when it comes to being compared with DEET - as said above 33% is the maximum effective level....use it and wear sensible protective clothing....anything else is second rate.

Have you found a citronella oil? It smells really good. However, it's not good for the humidity there. Anyway, the bugs attack you at night.. During the day, just wear long pants.

Citronella works but only for a relatively short time......mozzies that spread Dengue are known to fly in daytime - the worst time of day is a few house either side of dawn and dusk.
You should wear sensible clothes whenever.

7Eleven and some pharmacists sell small bottles of a clear liquid with a pink top and mostly pink label. SOFFELL. It is a mosquito repellent spray and it works very well.

Do check it is the spray and not a refill (which are usually a bit taller bottles).

SOFFELL is 13% DEET so it should be alright for mild mosquito problems, though at lower the percent it usually requires more frequent applications.
