Most people enjoy the Central and Northern areas of Vietnam more than the South. I like Hanoi for at least 4 days, Sapa for 2, Halong Bay for 2 and Hoi An for 3 or 4. Dalat is also very nice - 2 days.

My favourite part was the south, near the Mekong Delta. I suppose it's quite far out of your way since your going north but Ha Tien (spelling?) in the far south near the Cambodian boarder was fantastic, simply due to the lack of tourists and touts etc. Can To was also pretty cool, and you can do some day trips along the Mekong - although this is still quite south of Saigon. North of Saigon, I really enjoyed Mu Nei (spelling?), which is a sleepy beach town with affordable and decent guesthouses along the beach front. Beyond that, Hoi An has become a bit of a tourist circus but is still awesome, still has a great atmosphere (especially at night).

I preferred the North so I would agree with Daawgon's itinerary. Hanoi is my favourite city in SE Asia and definitely worth a few days. A good way to get from Hanoi to Hue is on the sleeper train and Hue is worth a stop for a day or 2. Hoi An is the place to get your suits made if you want to.

I didn't think much of Saigon especuially when compared to Hanoi. If you go head that far South, be sure to do a day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels- they're amazing.

12 days in Vietnam called the Best of Vietnam where you could visit most of interesting places throughout the country. Let's see 2 days in Hochiminh (1 day with Cu Chi tunnel and Cao Dai temple), other day with Mekong cruise (Hochiminh Citytour is no need as you can explore it during night time). Next can be Nha Trang where you can enjoy your life with scuba diving, island touring visits or just lay down at beachside - 3 days in Nha Trang would be okay. After Nha Trang, Hue or Hoi An is a good choice if you like discovering about history, tombs or traditional stuff, let's spend 2-3 days at those areas. Hanoi can be your last point with visit of Hanoian, Old Quarter, Halong on cruise or Sapa trekking. There are plenty options for 4-5 days in Hanoi that could interest you
