I've been looking for a good hostel in New York City, with particular emphasis on the neighbourhood, cause I don't want to end up needing a bodyguard or anything! I was looking around Madison Square Garden... somewhere around there, cause there are some hostels there which look a tad ghetto but seem to be close to everything (close enough anyway). Any suggestions on which areas and/or hostels to try?

try the big apple hostel: they're good, cheap, very basic, clean, in mid madhattan. new york is a very safe city in my opinion so don't think you'll need any bodyguard.
enjoy your stay!

No need for bodyguard in Manhattan.

After a night of drinking on a weekend we stumbled our way to our hotel from 5th ave and w 12th st to 8th ave and w 34th street with no trouble at all -- although i would not advise walking home drunk.

Manhattan is safe.

No, don't take the double-decker red bus. It's a waste of time. We took -snip- and got a 6 hour comprehensive tour of New York City from a heated shuttle. They took us everywhere with a professional tour guide on board. Their tour guides are real people who possess an amazing amount of knowledge about New York. They had portfolios of old new york while we were viewing modern New York. The company gives you free on board refreshments too. Go to -snip- for more info. They will give you a $10 discount if you mention a former customers name...just say Patrice Dice sent you. I have sent them a few people lately. With the discount it's $40. Not bad for a full 6 hour day!

[ Edit: sorry, no promos in the forum please.. ]

Just thought I'd mention that the Chelsea International hostel is the most unpleasant place I have stayed in any country.
