Quoting Redpaddy

So what about thoughts on the 'Worst' airlines - anybody??

This is actually a question for it's own thread...

Isa now returns this thread to it's originally scheduled topic...

Many of the better airlines seem to concentrate on superior Business Class service/seating while leaving Economy Class unchanged and cramped. I have not been on Emirates myself, but I think you could classify them among the airlines of which I speak. Ever since I started flying Asiana Airlines (one of the five Five Star airlines as so-classified by Skytrax), I have been impressed by their superior treatment of Economy Class passengers.

That's a great point, and different airlines definitely treat Economy class differently. I decided to check the seating for different airlines that operate the ultra long-range Airbus A340-500, and it's pretty interesting:

Emirates F12 C42 Y204 = total 258
Etihad Airways F12 C28 Y200 = total 240
Singapore Airlines C64 Y117 = total 183
TAM (Brazil) C42 Y225 = total 267
Thai C60 YW42 Y113 = total 215

Arik Air (NIgeria) also operates this type, but I don't have the seating info for them.

F = First Class, C = Business Class and Y = Economy. YW presumably a better version of Economy

Singapore, which is using their A340-500s on nonstop flights to the USA, obviously the clear winner in this little contest, while Emirates doesn't come out so well (second to last in total seating). Incidentally, only a total of 25 A340-500s in service, worldwide.

I have done my Manchester to Seoul flight with Emirates now so I can tell you what they were like. Seats-pretty good ; Inflight entertainment-the best ever (when it works)! Food-very good indeed, Service-appalling. On the Manchester to Dubai flight my inflight entertainment system wasn't working and it kepy turning itself off. I kept asking people to reset it but they hardly ever did. No-one EVER answered the call button even though i pressed it loads over the 8 hour flight. When someone did come over to me she looked at me like I was a piece of shit. Funny thing is though, although I didnt know it at the time, I was sat next to a girl who is head of a cabin crew for Emirates and she was flying home to Dubai. She told me she was digusted with the staff (they also didnt know she worked for Emirates) and that she would be complaining to her Uncle who is head of all Cabin crew for Emirates. Someone is in for a right bollocking soon!!!!

Interesting! And thanks for the 'report'. Always useful to know. And I guess they won't be catching up with Singapore Airlines any time soon!!

Quite interesting to hear so many not so satisfactory opinions of Emirates. I always had the impression they were one of the best - but it seems they're far from it.

While chatting with the girl I was sitting next to who worked for Emirates, she said that some of the crew have become complaicant because they have always had a good reputation, but now they are letting the airline down. Whereas airlines like Qatar airlines who are quite new on the scene are doing everything they can to be the best and putting more effort in. Which does make sense. But I think Emirates staff are going to be told to buck their ideas up as they really are quite bad. It is a shame as a lot about Emirates is really good. I dont like the 3-4-3 (or is it 3-5-3, I sat at a window seat all the way so I'm not sure about the middle isle) seat arrangements in Economy, but the seats are comfortable and the inflight entertainment is second to none.

Emirates' situation is interesting, and what makes it even more interesting is the fact that it's completely self imposed. In their quest for dramatic growth and expansion they have placed substantial orders for new aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing. They have orders for 58 of the ultra large A380, an absolutely astounding number. As comparison, other major airlines that have also ordered the A380 have done so in much more modest numbers; for instance Air France 12, British Airways 12, Lufthansa 15 and Singapore Airlines 19. Interestingly, the total A380 orders from these four major carriers, by a coincidence, happen to be exactly 58! And not a single airline in the USA - the largest airline market in the world - has placed any orders for the A380. (FedEx and UPS placed orders for the cargo version, but cancelled those orders).

Emirates' dilemma is that, for the most part, they rely on '6th freedom traffic'. For instance passengers from Europe to the Far East and Australia, who all have to connect through Dubai. The challenge for Emirates when they finally have all those 58 A380s will be how to fill those aircraft (not to mention all the other Airbus and Boeing aircraft they intend to operate). They will be competing against European and Asian carriers who will have the advantage of flying nonstop. In order to be competitive, Emirates will have no choice but to compete with price, and by doing so, they will automatically also be going after the more price sensitive travellers. Inevitably, in my opinion, service is bound to suffer.

Will be interesting...!

I've never travelled by Emirates' air lines, but i have a chanse to travell with Al Italia,it was awful.First of all they don't come in time, the service want's to be better!I was with my 2 little children,in the air port of Milan they didn't give some water to my children! They made me buy a bootle of water by a very high price,in time, when an italian boy, asked them a glass of water and got it!But for my children water was over!Next time i travelled with KLM,it's much better! The service is very good, the personnel was very attentevely with my children:)I've got a real pleasure from the trip!
