My boyfriend and I are going to be in the North of South Island for New Year and don't know where we should spend the night - we're tossing up between Christchurch and Nelson, and are open to other suggestions - any ideas where will be the best night?

Hi alabama,

Well... both are really nice places, but my call would be Nelson or the nearby Abel Tasman region. I say that because this area is much more alive with party and youth culture than Christchurch.

The Nelson Bays region is very popular during the holiday seasôn, so definitely book accommodation ahead of time. There are plenty of options available online for both hotels or hostel accommodation. You could visit New Zealand Focus for an example.

My absolute picj of places to be would probably be Kaiteriteri in the Abel Tasman region. It will be very busy, but I guess that is what you are looking for? A big party?

Have a great New Years.

Hi Katy,
I'm sure nzfocus has it right, but I want to add my own little caveat just in case.
I risk sounding like an old fart (I'm a youthful thirtysomething), but I stayed in Paihia in the Bay of Islands (north of the North Island) for Xmas and New Year two years ago and witnessed what happens to a resort town when it gets 'busy' for New Year.
There was a concert on a few miles from Paihia, so a few days before, the road along the beach became clogged with kids in cars and vans, 'camping' out for the festivities.
Fair enough, I thought, no problem with people having a good time. But I do have a problem with people turning the roads into dragstrips and pissing on the pavements - in daylight. It spoiled the last few days of a great couple of weeks in the town.
I have to say that New Zealand is my favourite place in the world, next to my Lake District home, but there is a problem with youth behaviour.
Whilst it never presented us a real problem, it did sour the taste for us. So choose your accommodation carefully if you wouldn't want to be in the middle of it.

Hi There !
I'm sure you would have a good time in Nelson or Christchurch .
Liquor Bans are often put in place for that night to help control teenagers . But Nelson and Christchurch seldom seems to have the trouble seen in Mt Manganui and Whanagamata !!
I personally have not spend New Year in Either city. I was just going on Media reports the next day !

Steve !

I definitely recommended checking out Takaka. its not far from nelson, just over the hill (kinda). its a cute lil hippy town the definitely comes to life over summer!! I'm not too sure whats happening there this year but they used to have a big concert thing with different bands sometime around new years.
Hope this is helpful
