My boyfriend and I will be doing a very similar route in a few weeks time, just before Christmas.

We've decided to spend a few nights in Melacca on the West Coast, then pass through KL and onto the Cameron Highlands which are meant to be absolutely amazing. We are missing alot of Malaysia out so as to get to the Highlands for Christmas, but hopefully will go back to the East Coast islands later on after the monsoon has passed as we have heard that they are fantastic too. I found a few websites which were really good for descriptions of areas and opinions of hostels, "things to do" etc.:

For info on transport in Malaysia, with timetables and prices: (busses)

We're probably going to get a flight to Thailand/Vietnam after that so as to avoid getting a train through South Thailand which has had some bad reports lately, not sure what the reality is but better to be safe than sorry as they say!

Have fun!
