Hi, I am a scandinavian girl travelling more or less alone in South America three months next year. I am not scared travelling alone, and I know girls travelling alone get extra attention. This I will learn to handle, but I was wondering if anyone had some extra tips... I.E will it be a good idea to colour my hair darker before I go (I am scandinavian blonde), will wearing a fake wedding ring help the unwanted attention (I can always take it of, right..) Anything else to keep in mind?

Hugs ;)

Whilst i obviously can't help from a personal persepective of being a blonde Scandinavian female (i once travelled like that in drag, but it didn't really help...), i have several friends who have been in similar situations. The overwhelming consensus seems to be that if you wear a fake wedding ring and dress conservatively (i.e. no bright pink fleece etc) as a general rule you won't have any trouble. Very long hair seems to attract more attention.

Don't know about dying your hair, but it may also work, as would using a cap/hat to cover much of it. One other thing - a friend said that whilst she wore a fake wedding ring, for a while she used to tell other travellers that it was fake. Apparently that's a BIG mistake, as word gets out to the locals surprisngly quickly, and you are then viewed as more of a target than if you hadn't at all. Strange but apparently true. Guessing it's other travelelrs tipping off the locals for their own amusement!

Good luck and happy travels whatever you decide.

I'm just back from a short 4 weeks trip but heres what I noticed in Egypt - Blondes do get a lot more attention, especially if its 'white blonde' and if you have long hair, for me I have long, black hair and it was annoying, if I had the guts I would have cut it short !
if you do have long hair and don't want to dye your hair then make sure you have hats / scarves with you....... dark sunglasses also help if you have blue or green eyes...

definitly wear a wedding band and as Gelli said don't tell anyone you don't know that its fake, you definitly become more of a target ( found that mistake out too late ! )

if possible keep your clothes discreet, no baby soft colours or colours that stand out, if you have a bit of extra cash pick up a few cheap local pieces to blend in ....

and strangely enough if you are friendly or a smiley person many foreign men seem to assume you are flirting !?!? which can be very confusing if you are just thanking someone for opening a door !

Hope you have a great time,
