I’m arriving in New Zealand with two friends at the start of November and can’t wait! We are all going on working holiday visas and was wondering what is the best way of finding employment? We are arriving in Auckland and hoping to travel around! Any suggestions on good hostels, places to go, things to do would be much appreciated. Also anyone in New Zealand during this time that wants to meet up or travel some of the way with us would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance for any info,

Hi Emma

I'd recommend staying in a hostel in one of the suburbs, rather than the city centre, when you arrive; Ponsonby is a lovely leafy suburb and has loads of bars, restaurants and take-aways. It's a 20 minute walk into the city or a 5-10 minute bus ride. Parnell and Mt Eden are both nice suburbs too and are close to the city. is the main job website for NZ and is good for more casual employment and for other listings such as flat-shares, cars for sale etc.

There's loads of stuff to do in and around Auckland but you need a car for a lot of it. I'd recommend going to Rangitoto for the day - it's an extinct volcano and it's a nice walk to the top- get the ferry from the city. Devenport also has some nice walks and is ferry ride from the city. 'K' road is quite cool and has several bohemian-type shops and some nice cafes. If you have a car you could drive to Piha beach and also go for a walk in the Waitakere ranges while you are out that way.

We stayed in a great hostel at Mt Eden, we had a car and picked this one as there was parking. There was also a good bus service nearby into the city. We booked it through hostel bookers, can't remember the name sorry.

I'm getting in to Christchurch on the 28th November (after a month in Oz) and travelling up to Auckland where I will be flying home on the 23rd December, so would be cool to meet up. I'm 27 and will be travelling on my own.....getting very excited now!

You really would be better staying in the area you're heading to otherwise you waste valuable time (and you don't have much) driving. I see three options- stay in Auckland for the time and tour aound there, there is still lots to do- Waiheke Island, Piha, West Coast, city etc. OR travel up to Whangarei (Tutukaka Coast) is beautiful maybe one night there and one in Pahia/Russell in the Bay of Islands OR Travel to Rotorua, do the whole geothermal, Maori, tourist thing with side trip (or one night) to Mt Maunganui(beach) Taupo (lake) or Waitomo Caves, all achievable with out too much driving.
