besides the very obvious things, like clothes, passports and the wallet (if you also mean the obvious it would be these three.) :)

earplugs - always the first thing that I pack. Without them it would be impossible for me to sleep in a lot hostels.
photo camera - I make pictures everywhere (also to use at the TP Guide.)
ipod - music, I love it, and need it everywhere.
