Hey there, Melbourne is a cultured place and I reckon worth a visit. Take the Princess Highway from Sydney to Melbourne as it travels along the coast. Even if you do not make it all the way to Melbourne the coast is gorgeous for surfing and fishing and fresh produce. We did it and stayed at Big 4 Holiday Parks you get 10% discount if you are a member. This saved us a few bucks.
I'd say it depends on where you come from.
I was in oz for 4 months but only stayed in Melbourne for 4 days. It just reminded me too much of New York or Philly. It felt very American (tons of trolleys, buses, trains, malls, overpopulated....) not a bad thing at all, but I grew up in Philly and have spent a lot of time in NY... for me, I flew Halfway around the world to see the outback, the beautiful beaches, the rain forests, fraser Island, the great barrier reef.
I know a few people that stayed in Melb for a few months and absolutely loved it when they got to know where all the little bars and clubs were at...but all of those people grew up in rural areas...so it was a change of pace for them.

I'm from Berlin and lived in Melbourne for a year and actually thought that the pace of life was a lot slower than in Sydney for example. I enjoyed different aspects of Melbourne, e.g. the cultural life, European touch to it, great bar scene and I think Melburnians are very friendly people. But hey, each to their own .
I definitely think it's worth a visit and once you're there, you should also head to Phillip Island for the Penguins, Wilson's Prom for hiking and the Great Ocean Road for the stunning scenery.
Most people who are tourists and like tourist orientated places would like Melbourne. It is worth a visit, but I would aim to go a bit further and do the Great Ocean Road as well. That is a very scenic area of Victoria that is well worth going along.
