Hi Colin,
We went to Fuertaventura 18 mnths ago on our first ever cheap and cheerful "package holiday".
The old town (by the harbour edge) is okay, plenty of local restaurants offering fresh seafood and pizza, and the edge of the main street there's quite a fair few British bars with 80s discos, karaoke, Elvis nights etc if that's your thing. A couple of decent ones in the middle with live acoustic music (we were entertained most evenings by Steve from Manchester and his 3-piece band
)
We rented a car for a day and drove ourselves to a couple of little towns and just to take in the scenery. Be mindful of their siesta times as if you had not had lunch by 1.30pm, you'll just hv to wait until dinner!
Flag Beach is lovely for kite-surfing/watching - don't bother with a picnic as you will be eating sand (hey, sand-wiches!), the breeze is that strong!
Sangria by the pool is a must, and never be without your Travel Scrabble and some good anecdotes for a decent conversation!
