How long to get from Cuzco to Quito?

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean How long to get from Cuzco to Quito?

I'm planning 4 months in South America as part of my RTW trip. We have already booked a Galapagos Islands boat tour from the 24th - 31st of August. We'll be doing the Inca Trail in Peru also which we want to book in advance as well. We'll then be getting buses from Cuzco to Quito for our Galapagos trip. So i'm just wondering if anyone knows how long it will take roughly to get from Cuzco to Quito? Will we have to get a few buses, eg to Lima and then another one to Quito? It'll be a long trip so maybe we should split it up by spending a couple of nights in Lima on the way?

I was thinking of booking the Inca trail for around the 9th of August - 2 weeks before we have to be in Quito for our Galapagos tour. We'd be finished the trail and head back to Cuzco on the 13th - giving us 10 days before our Galapagos trip starts. Is this too much time to leave ourselves to get to Quito? I'm just paranoid about it taking longer than expected and missing our flight to Galapagos! But I also don't want to leave too much time & waste a few days that could be spent in other places (I've heard Lima's not too nice)

I'll be grateful for any input!

I think 10 days is a good time allowance. Buses over there are slow and often unreliable. Giving yourselves 10 days will definatley ensure that you are in Quito in time to take your flight over to he Galapagos, but if you arrive early, Quito is a fantastic place with lots to see and do - you certainly won't regret it if you end up with a day or two to explore this amazing place on your way over to Galapagos. I spent two weeks in the galapagos and 5 days in Quito and loved every minute of it - hope you do too!

Even though busses aren't overly reliable (although it isn't really that bad), 10 days is excessive. But, Quito is a wonderful city indeed, so you won't be bored. You may to consider making an extra stop in Cuenca, which is also very much worth your while.
