Hey Gang.
Does anyone have any information about trains going into Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu? It looks like there are trains that should be going there... I've known people who have gone there by train... but when I search the train schedule they are non-existent. What gives?
Are Rameswaram trains no longer running? And if not, how else would one get there? By boat?
Cheers,
Cynthia

Cynthia,
From where do you want to go to Rameswaram? Check www.indianrail.gov.in. You can get all information.
If you are in Madurai, there are many buses that go to Rameswaram.
Try avoiding going there on new moon days as it's difficult to get a good accommodation due too many people visiting on that day.
All the best.

You have not mentioned which place are you travelling from?? Anyway if u have problems in using the Indian railway website(www.indianrail.gov.in), you can check the website www.cleartrip.com and click on the Train click. This site sometimes works better for new users because for bigger stations, it has an option to search for multiple stations in the same city... e.g. Chennai has many stations like Chennai Egmore, Central, Beach, etc, on the official Indian railway site there is no option for Chennai(All Stations), so u have to select a specific station from the drop down menu. This anamoly has been rectified in the Cleartrip website which has an option as Chennai(All Stations).
Hope this helps

Train to Rameswaram from Chennai is not advisable. Best option is to take a train from Chennai to Madurai. (Around 9 hour’s journey; dozens of trains each day). Lots of busses go from Madurai to Rameshwaram everyday (around 3 hrs trip). If you don’t want to stay in Rameswaram then you can also take day trip from Madurai to Rameswara (to and fro). Lot of travel agencies have day trip to Rameswaram. Madurai is a central point from where you can get connecting train to almost all the places in Tamil Nadu (kanyakumari, Kodaikanal etc). Do visit Meenakshi temple in Madurai (5 mins walk from railway station). For Train details you can see Cleartrip.com
Two trains goes fro Chennai To Rameswaram and takes around 12 hours (Train no 6101 leaves chennai at 7.55PM and reaches Rameswaram at 8.35 AM and Train no 6713 leaves chennai at 5.00PM and reaches Rameswaram at 4.45AM)

Thank you all for the information.
We shall be traveling from Madurai to Rameswaram.
However, when I searched the http://www.indianrail.gov.in website (which I agree - it is absolutely NOT user friendly.) and again when I checked train schedules on mustseeindia.com - the message coming up is "No trains available for the current selection" even when i put in specific train numbers and stations. Wierd.
Then, I saw this morning in a friends Lonely Planet India Guide, that Rameswaram trains were closed in 2006 for upgrade to broad guage, and that it would take a couple of YEARS for them to be up and running.
Can anyone confirm this? We were so looking forward to traveling over the water to this holy island.

There are still some trains from Madurai to Rameshwaram despite the gauge conversion work !!
Train no 6734 is the only express train currently between the above two cities, but it runs only on Thursdays and leaves Madurai at 4:10 PM and arrives at Rameswaram at 7:50 PM. This train is available for online booking on the official Indian railway booking site, www.irctc.co.in. Remember it operates only on Thursdays !!
2-3 slower passenger trains also operate daily between the two cities but these slower trains will not show up on the booking sites as they are not available for online booking. These take around 6 hours to cover the same distance.
As an alternative, u can very well use the buses, plenty of them are availabe on this route
Do let me know if u need any more info
Cheers
Arif

By rail and by road Rameswaram is connected with all major cities like Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Thanjavur.
As an indication only I have selected a date to show the train available to go to Rameswaram from Chennai.
http://www.yatra.com/indian-railways/resultV2.html?quota=GN&session_id=&dest_stn_code=RMM&destination=rameswaram&origin=chennai&adt=1&s=n&submitrail.x=36&chd=0&srctnw=0&src_stn_code=MAS&submitrail.y=12&ddate=01%2F03%2F2010&Class=3A&srctzn=0&

Thank you Arif, you are helpful as always! We prefer the train, but its good to know that the bus is a viable alternative.
Thank you, Reshmi for the Yatra site. Haven't looked at that one before.
Cheers!
