I have been to all the Islands (except the Big Island - Hawaii) and my absolute favorite was Kauai. Rural, charming, tropical, and more secluded. It is the most authentic Hawaiin Island remaining - I say this based on the opinions of friends and family who have visited the Big Island and Kauai. To truly getaway, visit Kauai. If you want more action (more tourists too!) Maui or Hawaii are better bets.

sorry to re-activate an old thread but thought it best rather than starting a brand new one which has links to the previous comments.
Due to circumstances back home, we've had to postpone oue RTW trip so we think we'll be in Hawaii by November. I think this is a good time to visit from what I've read. We're still quite set on the Big Island and will probably just stay for 1 week.
Does anyone know of any good hostels on the BI please? I've heard good things about the Hilo Bay hostel. Also I know everyone says you need a car but can this be done cheaply? Also do you know of any good tour guides in case we decide not to rent a car? Rather than going with a big company who drives people around on coaches, I'd love to meet a local guide who can take us around - of course budget permitting.
