I'm flying out to hong kong and spending a few days there, then onto oz! I've spoken to the guy at work some more and it seems the chance of a job is pretty good so i've decided not to head to Perth til after xmas. I didn't intend to do a stopover anywhere but the woman in the travel agents talked me into it ha ha. Next step is to sort my insurance out and find somewhere to stay in Hong Kong! It's all so exciting!

That sounds brill, so when r u booked to leave??
Good news about the job front, i think you will be happy with the decision to not go until after xmas and have a chance to do some travelling first, cause at least then you have had an extended holiday then go to work and you never know it may lead to something more permanant, but if you had done it first you may not have got that chance to have the time off and see what oz had to offer. im so pleased for you.
I have been asking myself lots of questions over the last week, about what i want to do and where i want to go, and i have come to the conclusion that i cant see myself doing this totally alone, landing in sydney not knowing a sole so if i dont meet a like minded person on here before hand who fancies travelling together to oz, even if it only for the 1st week i am going to go do the ozintro thing, then at least you can maybe meet up before hand and then fly together as a group x

You're right about the work situation, i don't want to miss out on exploring oz and having fun since that was the whole point of the trip in the first place. As for ozintro type stuff, i think that's a good idea if u don't like the thought of turning up on your own and having to find your way. Looking at all the ozintro info it looks really exciting and they really do help you get loads of stuff sorted out. If u decide to go ahead with it you'll love it, i'm sure. I'm the total opposite to you in the sense that i really want to go it alone at first. It's like a personal challenge for me, going to hong kong, carrying on to sydney, doing it all without getting lost ha ha. I'm booked to leave heathrow on sept 20th. I was going to go the week before but with my stopover the flight out of hong kong wasn't available on that date so i've had to put it back a week but not to worry. It'll soon be here!!

Know what you mean about going it alone, although I guess I'm kinda cheating since I know 'a' person in Perth, but it's just a back up. I'm not staying with them and not travelling with anyone I know, I think it's just a journey I want to experience and maybe make me grow up or perhaps 'wise up' to things as I feel like I've been a bit wrapped up in cotton wool. Although GOD, turned 30 yday and just SO GLAD that I'm doing this and have it to look forward to (20 weeks to go!) else I think I would just be so depressed!!

Keb, not sure how I'm going to get around while I'm in Oz, but not too concerned as I'll figure it out when I get there. Public transport in Perth is pretty good, and then there's the Greyhound that everyone talks about.

Gail, I def think you should do what's right for you and what you're comfortable with. I personally couldn't hack going on Oz Intro, partly because all the kiddies on it and partly because I'm stubborn in my old age and want to do my own thing on my own time etc

Louise, sounds like it's all coming together for you! I would love to do Hong Kong, but will do on the way back once I've grown some balls! We should try and keep the thread going so we all know how we end up after all this talk!!

Hi Jess, happy birthday for yesterday! Welcome to the world of the flirty thirties ha. It's great! I'm like you, need to do my own thing and couldn't cope with ozintro i don't think. I've just booked my hotel in hong kong, gone for somewhere posh but hey, i'm only there two days, might as well live it up ha! So what have u got booked so far? Xx

Thanks Louise! Ha ha I like that 'flirty thirties'!

Oooh nice posh hotel, yea I agree do it now and enjoy it while it lasts! I don't think we'll get to the stage of sleeping in tents or on benches but it's nice to have something lavish to start with.
I've booked an apartment in South Perth for 3 weeks so I'm going to make the most of it as after that I will probably move into a house share since they seem to be way cheaper than hostels! Thing is, I've never shared a place with more than one person, even in London, so it's going to be a challenge!!! I'm hoping the Aussie laid back attitude will brush off on to me and chip away at my uptight "pommieness"!

That's all I've booked though so far, I'm just going to see what happens and I don't want to be stuck to a schedule, I want to pick up and go when I feel like it. Main plan is just to see as much as poss while I'm over that side so will def pop in to HK on the way back! You'll have to let me know where to go and where to avoid once you've been!!

I'd like to check out house shares but i'm gonna book into hostels to start with til i find somewhere i wanna stay for a while. I think houseshare will be a great experience, more chilled out than hostels, less crazy i suspect! I'll keep you posted in hong kong. I don't think i'm going to do too much while i'm there, just explore a little and try and get over any jet lag so i'm fresh and wide awake when i hit Sydney. I might actually price up a houseshare for my first week in Sydney, just to see how it compares to the hostels. If there's a big difference i might just go with that. I know a girl in Sydney at the moment and if she's still there in Sept i might be able to crash with her but i'm not sure yet. Best to have something set up just in case. I definately want to visit perth too so you'll have to let me know all the best bits! Xx

Ok one shit thing about temping - you don't get paid when you're off sick! I'm totally screwed this month now and the count down to Oz is now turning into a panic! I don't want to have to be worrying about anything before I go but my list of 'to do's' is still as long as my arm - I thought this was supposed to be the fun bit?!!

Aw Jess, try not to panic! This is the exciting bit, although i admit i'm stressing about money too. I feel like i've hardly organised anything yet. I've booked my flight and bought my luggage but that's it! I've got to wait for payday til i can organise anything else, it's very frustrating!!

Hi I hope you don't mind me joining in, there are so many posts on here to read and it looks as though there are a lot of girls from the UK either considering going to Oz by themselves, or have actually booked a trip which reassures me as I am planning on going in September (and by 27 years old should have a little more common sense than I did five years ago when I first considered this!). I wonder if anyone can give me pointers on what I would need to do first? I have researched so many things and have a list of hostels across Australia that seem to have fairly good recommendations but my initial concern is I fly to eg Sydney, then I am there in the city on my own and not sure where to take it from here? I just wondered what other people do/are doing as this is the part that worries me slightly! I'm not sure whether to book accommodation, transport etc for my first day or whether to do one of these trips which is almost like a package deal that includes transfers from the airport to accommodation for five nights so you can get your bearings etc. As someone who would be travelling alone for the first time I like the idea but also understand it would probably cost more than if I was to arrange something myself.

Many thanks Zoe
