Redbacks tend to like to hide outside in cool dark areas like cracks in brickwork, they aren't that common and try to run away rather than jump on you. Funnel webs are more interesting, they hide under rotting wood or in holes and are more aggressive and will tend to rear up but won't bite unless provoked. Again they aren't very common.

Most likely you'll mostly see harmless spiders. You might find the occasional wolf spider or huntsman inside but they don't make webs they're just as scared of you as you are of them and they'll run away. The worst ones are orb weaving spiders when you walk straight into their webs - they scare the life out of you! As far as I know they aren't poisonous but I've never been bitten

Appreciate that information Tim, it has reassured me a little. Now all I have to worry about is work and money. Larvly :P

Hey guys,
Me, my girlfriend and a friend are going on a RTW year long trip starting on the 10th Oct 2010, and yes, our flight is scheduled to leave at 10pm, which is beyond crazy!

After that, we are on our own for 2 and a half months, we dont want to stray to far away from Perth because my family will be flying out to my sisters house for Christmas. We do want to do *something* though?
Are there any must see/must do in WA? As we would like to get them out of the way before Christmas.

Thanks for letting me bore you with my excitement.

Things I can think of do in and around Perth:

Definitely the beaches at that time of year! Any beach is fine but Cottesloe is probably the most well known and has a couple of pubs across the road which is always nice

Shopping and eating in Fremantle. Good pubs in Freo - Little Creatures and the Norfolk

Kings Park at night (overlooks the city)

Winery tours in the Swan Valley - can do them by bus or by boat up the Swan River

Road trip down to Bussleton/Dunsborough/Margaret River region. Takes about 3 hours by car. These are all REALLY popular places in the summer though so you will definitely have to book accommodation in advance. But there are amazing wineries and beautiful beaches down there.

Esperance is on the south coast of WA and has the most beautiful beaches. White sand and blue water like you wouldn't believe. Just google image search Esperance and what you see is what you get, the water really is that blue and clear! That is a fair way away from Perth though - about a 6-7 hour drive.

You should definitely do Rottnest while you're here. You probably won't get accommodation but you can do day trips there. And yeah, the only way to get around is walking or by bike. Another island off the coast is Penguin Island. It is pretty cool, really little, but good for a picnic and snorkeling. There is a sand spit that when the tide is right, you can walk along it to get to the island (about 30 min walk from memory). There is also a ferry if that doesn't appeal!

I know you said you don't want to stray too far from Perth but seeing as you are going to be there for over 2 months you should try and get up to the north of WA. Places like Ningaloo Reef, Coral Bay, Shark Bay, Karijini National Park all look amazing (and are on the top of my places to see list). Oh and might as well go to Broome if you are going to travel that far!

Thanks for the info Greenbird, I will show it to my party and we can research and discuss the places from there.

I bought a new domain today, one to keep my family and friends updated on what we are up to (rather than spam facebook; which I will probably do as well).

I got :

I'm Dorothy
