Hi
I'm starting off my year's travelling in Bangkok on the 5th September and planning to take a rough route of Bangkok, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Northern Thailand, South Islands, Malaysia before flying out of Singapore to Oz in mid December.
Anybody else doing a similar route at similar times? Can't wait to go but still a bit nervous about going solo even though loads of mates have told me its the best way to travel.
Was considering trying to fit in some volunteering along the way but still not sure. Anybody else done any in and around Cambodia or Vietnam?
Phil

Hi Phil,
Sounds as tho you are doing the same trip as me minus Oz but a month later.
My plans arent set in stone yet but I hope to leave in Oct for Burma, Bangkok, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Northern Thailand, South Islands and Malaysia and will also be travelling solo.
What route are you taking? And what volunteering were you thinking of doing? All volunteering ive looked at has cost to do which has put me off.

I'm starting off in Bangkok and then basically following round an anticlockwise route round SE Asia and back into Bangkok, before heading for the Thai Islands. Haven't really looked in to the Malaysia section of it yet.
I've had the same problem with find volunteering that is cheap enough to do but I did find one called the green gecko project which is working with street kids in Cambodia. I only have a couple of weeks to spare though and they seem to be geared up for people who have a bit longer so I'm not sure whether I'll be able to do it or not yet.

If you can't find any organised volunteering you could always spend time with the many children in Cambodia and just talk with them. I'm sure the rewards would be just as fulfilling.

I'm traveling solo right now and it is an amazing experiene. Look with dorm-style hostels with positive reviews by young people. That way, you'll meet a lot of people. I am also squeezing in volunteering into my travels. I will volunteer for free in thailand for one month. Accomodation is provided for free but you provide for your food which is still an exceptional deal considering how cheap food is in Thailand. Have fun planning.
