What about South Africa?
It's so hot this summer

Surely its winter out there right now - and in Cape Town this morning it was -4c.

Yeah, flights to China from North America ARE expensive this summer. It's actually cheaper right now to fly via Europe.

BUT once you get to China, it's very cheap. You can travel across the country by train (sleeper) for $50-$60. (Try doing that in Europe!) And you can get a really nice hotel room for two for less than the price of a single bed in a 10-person hostel dorm in Paris. Lunch for 2 in a small noodle shop: $2-$3.

So don't let the high price of flights discourage you... there might be some way to get a bargain, if you are creative (like flying to Japan or S.E.Asia first).

Sad to hear that your trip got canceled -- hopefully this next one will work out perfectly!

In terms of trip ideas, if you're looking for outdoor adventure and culture at a lower cost, you may want to check out some of these destinations:

Phuket, Thailand: Great nightlife, thriving city, and wonderful beaches. According to lonely planet, it "boasts some lush inland vistas, including a few remote swathes of rainforest on Ko Yao". There are also "tons of water sports, delectable restaurants and decadent resorts..." Your air ticket will be more expensive, but food and housing will definitely be very low-cost.

Rio de Janerio, Brazil: Gorgeous landscape, laidback beach culture and famous annual carnival. Lots of sights to check out including Sugar Loaf mountain, Corcovado Peak, and the hills of Tijuca... sounds like something you'd enjoy! Your air ticket will probably cost you <$1000 per person, and the flight will probably be pretty bearable too.

Cesme, Turkey: A coastal city with gorgeous beaches and resorts, but with lots of culture too -- the entire city is built around the historic Cesme Castle, and the town Alacati is famous for Greek architecture (...and windsurfing)! It's also a good base for travel to the Greek island of Chios, but this flight will probably be the most expensive one out of the three I'm suggesting here.

If you're interested, do check out -snip- too -- a new travel recommendation engine launching this summer. You can enter your city of departure, budget, activities of interest, and time of travel, and we'll recommend a whole list of destinations for you to check out, including the three cities I just mentioned.

Hope this helps you solve some of your pre-travel woes :)
