I think for just hiking on trails that walking shoes should be fine. Depends on whether there will be streams to wade through. What will happen to the shoes if you get them wet or muddy. You need an alternate type of footwear for those occasions. I took both boots and Treva sandals to Costa Rica, and I needed both of them. It took quite a bit of effort to get the mud off so I could pack to go home.

You can buy hiking trainers...
They don't last as long as normal trainers on hard surfaces (tarmac/concrete etc) but they're more than adequate for 6-12 months.
