Wheels or no wheels??

Travel Forums General Talk Wheels or no wheels??

Hi I am about to head off on a 2 year overseas trip so need to pack all seasons in one. The main thing I am looking for now is a new backpack. My last one was a 65L that did well except that I seemed to drag it around a lot because it hurt my back to carry (I am a fairly tall but only slim girl) so the bottom of the bag got all destroyed. What do ppl think of the backpacks with wheels as well as a harness?? I am rying to decide which way to go! Any experiences would be great. I am backpacking around, not hiking with the backpack or anything. Just general walking from train stations to backpackers etc.

Hi Millymoo2 (is there really a millymoo1? lol),
Welcome to the forums. :) I think it depends on where you are going. Overseas covers a lot of places. If you are going into really poor and desperate countries wheels will do you less good as in they need smooth surfaces.

I prefer a good old North Face quality, comfortable backpack. But being a big dude and triathlete it's different. I travel a lot with my sisters. They really are glad to have wheels. The are constantly using them. I am pretty happy too (means I don't have to carry their bags. haha). Really a no brainer because it saves mucho energy all the time. My only warning to them/you is DON'T LEAVE IT SOMEWHERE. With wheels you will be pulling the bag, it's so easy to let go and get distracted. Poof. Everything is gone. Buy a Snowboard lock and cable it to your waste. Sounds dumb. It's not.

peace out,

My suggestion would be to try packing light and bringing a smaller bag. Dig through some of the old threads in the Travel Gear forum and you'll find that it is quite possible to live out of a bag that is 35-45 liters for several years.

A backpack that is approx 40 liters will be much lighter and thus easier to carry.

I don't like the backpack with wheels things that are available on the market, bc either the wheels are crap or the carrying system is a complete joke. And they are heavy, ridiculously expensive and way too large in volume. The idea is great, but I haven't seen one yet that I liked.

i do recommend those with wheels as it is much easier to drag around. i too don;t want to carry my bags especially when backpacking. bags with wheels are very convenient might be a bit costly but does provide great comfort when traveling.
