While traveling to the Grand Bahama Island a few years ago, my wife and I wanted to rent a car, but unfortunately all of the major car rental agencies were very expensive, beyond what we could afford. Then a someone on the island told us about a small, independant car rental company that had cars that were several years old and rented for about 50% less.

Does someone know about an independant car rental company in Costa Rica, in or near San Jose, and how we could contact them?

Thanks for your help!

HI There
I own A Bed & Breakfast here in Costa Rica ..Car companies can be a bit unscrupulous by waiting until you are iN their office to inform you that there is additional charges for INsurance coverage I use a very good company that not only delivers to my Inn but gives my guests discount rates ..NOW about "private car rnetals " They do exist here BUT I would personally be afraid to use them because of their lack of FULL Insurance ..so please beware . ( I HIGHLY Recommend FULL Insurance in Costa Rica ..they drive like maniacs )
I rarely have time to come here because it is my busy season ..Good Luck

Debbie is 100% right...The deductible is usually $800-$1200 in CR and Central America on standard insurance and a dent or scratch could cost you a $100 or more! Full Insurance is around $50-60 day but may save you far more in the end. The main roads in CR are among the worst in the region and rental cars have special plates, always wear seat belt. In the rest of Central America, where children and drunks and dogs often dart onto the roadways, it is far better to either find a tour operator,or a local driver-owner or hire a taxi by the day..negociate. I drove my own vehicles 14 years in Central America, however we often had to rent 4WD drive vehicles for special excursions and I always recommended full insurance coverage to the client. Have a CR tour operator who has a discount deal with one of rental companies in San Jose, however she is pretty tied up until March also.
