My plane arrives in Barcelona airport at 23:45. I was thinking to sleep in the airport for the night to save on accomodation??? I know it will be rough! Anyone who has been to this airport know if it will be safe enough???

You'll be fine.
It's a pretty big airport and doesn't have any overnight flights to speak of, as do some European airports.
As long as the night workers can see you're with baggage and have an onward flight - and you're not just bumming a free couch for the night, they'll leave you alone. The cafes and snack bars open up at around 05:00 for the first flights of the day, which leave about 06:00.
I'll be very surprised if you get any bother.

Hi! It is approx a 25-30 minute train ride into the city, train runs from 0600 - 2330, so you will JUST miss the last train. El Prat seemed to be a pretty safe, well lit place, so you will probably be fine for 6 hours there. Advise to avoid the hotels @ the airport....when we missed our flight leaving BCN back to the U.S., we didnt want to go back into the city and risk missing our flight the next a.m., so we stayed in the cheapest place near the airport we could get..... at 130 Euro a night...ouch! But at that point we were so exhausted, we wouldve probably paid double that....

I arrived in Barcelona airport at 10 pm and was flying out at 10 am. (by the way, when you have a 12 hour layover or more, they make you pick up your suitcase ) I took the green shuttle bus from terminal 1 to terminal 2, which does indeed operate all night. I brought a sleeping bag and pillow and layed out on the floor of the check in lobby of the terminal. There were some 50 others sleeping on the floor in Terminal 2 that night, along all the walls and near all the columns. It was quiet except every hour, at 21 minutes after the hour, there is a very loud announcement to watch your luggage, which did not wake me up, but I am a deep sleeper. At precisely 4 am, 5 uniformed airport workers swept thru the terminal and woke everyone up. So, one can get quite a few hours of sleep. Bring eye shades. Bathrooms are clean.
