"gonna get a flight down to adelaide and work my way around and up the east coast, im planning on spending a couple of months in each state then back to sydney before i go home."

Thats a great idea. I come from australia and that the cheapest way to do it, domestic airlines are easily seen on webjet but they are Virgin blue, jetstar and tiger.

When travelling through from adelaide to melbourne, go via the grampians they are a great senic route. Also travel from warrnambool to geelong along the great ocean road!

Then melbourne to canberra.

" im gonna get around, trains, buses, planes, hitch rides with other travellers heading in the same direction..what about you? have you planned out what you want to do and the places you want to go and visit or are you just going up the east coast and play it by ear?["

So a few hints:

Hitching is illegal and highly dangerous in Victoria and the rest of Australia.
Bus lines in Victoria are VLine they also run adn rural/state wide train service (
Metro in melbourne is easy to get around and if you are staying for a while i suggest you get a weekly saver
Melbourne discovery is a great central backpackers, and they aren't expensive, and very safe.

New South Wales are They have the best Public transport layout in aus
Don't just go to bondi. Its very touristy, try manly or deewhy, if you go tomanly walk along the espanade. Or go via ferry and take a different route. Great way to see the habour.

South Australia Very small city cheap accomadation but not loads of places. Walkable!

Hey there,
I'm staying at Sydney YHA Railway from Dec 29th until 2nd Jan. I'd love to head over to see the fireworks so would anyone like to meet up? I'm up for a party but nothing too wild!
Kathryn :)

If your coming to South Aus,

Best to arrive in Feb/March.

Biggest time of the year here with several festivals (Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival and Clipsal 500 (Big Car Racing Event)

The city goes off at this time of the year :)
