hey,
in berlin, die Fabrik is a nice place to stay at. It's not expensive and the neighbourhood's great.
And I said it before and I'll say it again: check out the couchsurfing options ... That won't be a problem in both Berlin as Norway, I think.

Enjoy Berlin, it's the greatest place on earth :)

I've stayed both at Hotel Pension Charlottenburg and at Berlin-Cityroom in the past two years and thought both were great value. They're not luxury, but the rooms were exactly what I expected from them on both occassions. Peter, my brother and co-admin/owner of the site, stayed at Jacobs Apartments in Bergen and liked it.

I can recommend a bunch of places in Oslo if you like as I live here, but not really sure if Oslo is where you are travelling? :)

I don't think any places will be closed just for Christmas, although there is at least one hostel that closes for the whole winter. Anker hostel is pretty good (it's cheap for Norway, and quality is basic) all things considered, and is in a great location. Cochs Pensjonat is another one that's pretty good and in possibly an even better location. Hope that helps!

hi, Sam I Am,

what would you recommend to do in Osla between 23-26 dec? seems that a lot of museums and shops are closing, wondering what to do =.="
thanks!

Sam I am is right. For a backpacker, Anker hostel is probably the best bet.

You can always go out even though museums are closed. Moreover, get on couchsurfing, get some Norwegian friends and experience a proper Norwegian christmas. They'll offer you brown cheese, aquavit, and everything.

Do you ski? Even if you don't, that's the kind of thing Norwegians do this time of year. You can take a tram/bus up to Tryvann (about 20-30mins), then rent some skis and do that. Or, go really Norwegian and get cross-country skis and do one of the many trails through the mountains there. Of course if it's your first time on skis and you are alone, this option is not really that great...
