Hi all
I was just interested to know what are the top 5 things that backpackers never travel without? or just really weird things that turned out to be useful.
Cheers

My dad won't ever travel without dental floss. He's used it to fix more things than I can remember, even using it to tie the chain of his bike together after it had broken.... those stories always cracked me up as a kid!
I personally cannot travel without music. It`s became boring for me to listen the stupid conversation of other people and etc. Also magazines, regular staff and A lot of money in the pocket :DDD
1 ATM card
1 Credit card
300 US dollars (very important for last minute backup)
2 Universal Plug converter (I always have 1 broken along the way because of voltage)
2 Pens
1 notebook
1 lighter (I don't smoke, but very useful for trekker)
1 small torch light or head lamp (bring along 1 set of new battery)
1 multi purpose knife
2 locks
n plastic or ziplock bags (good for the rainy season)
that is all I can think of.
in places like Thailand, you can find dental floss/shampoo/conditioner/lotion/etc in small traveling size packaging in 7-Eleven and cheaper than home, so no point to bring a lot.
I always going with Johan. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_WKg3mGDnvcE/TCogpJrITlI/AAAAAAAABNA/_9Ag_Q8ssfk/s1600/P1010642.JPG (his photo)
laptop / notebook
external hard drive with loads of movies for long buses
Duck tape, fixes anything
anti-diarrhea pills
toilet paper if the anti-diarrhea pills haven't kicked in yet
Time. Patience.
I will never travel without my deodorant. :-)
sweetjenny, you bring FIVE deodorants? That's just weird.
ALWAYS WITH ME!!!! My Leatherman.
Always in my kit.
Two Carabiners
A roll of parachute cord
a roll of electrical tape.
A deck of cards
A harmonica.
