Hey all
I am Australian and I am going to Thailand, Laos and Vietnam soon and i was wondering what I need to rent a motorbike/scooter. Do I need an international drivers license. If so can I get one while I am on my p2s (provisional licence).

cheers

I've never been asked for more than my passport Never even been asked for a drivers license, let alone one that had a motorcycle endorsement. Thats not to say that it wouldnt be a bad idea to your international license if you can.

I have rented MBs in Thailand & VN. They don't care about your license, but most will keep your passport until you return the MB w/o damage. Remember that you are riding illegally. You don not have a DL for that country. The rental shop doesn't care, but the police may. If stopped, you will have to pay the fine on the spot. Usually not too expensive. Be very defensive while riding. You are in a very poor position if you hit something, somebody or damage the MB. The local police are going to side with the MB owner and help decide how much you will have to pay. I have seen this turn very ugly in Pattaya. Riding MBs in SEA is fun, but there is a downside if anything goes wrong.

Good luck and ride safely.
