We'll be road tripping it down the East Coast of Austrailia from Cairns to Sydney and need to hire a car for around 2 weeks, maybe more depending on costs. We dont really want to fly from Cairns to Brisbane and then hire a car as there are places along the way we want to visit!!

Any recommendations of car hire companies that are affordable???x

Hi there,

Although there are probably a few local ones that are even cheaper, I would not save too much money on car hire. Also, it is best to not book directly with companies like Hertz, Avis, Budget or Thrifty but check car broker websites, like, or websites like expedia etc. They all book cars through the big companies mentioned above, and those companies generally have cars younger than 2 years and have good helping facilities in case something goes wrong.

I think that a small car including insurance is possible for just around 30 USD a day. That is not a lot of money, certainly not if you split it with 2-3 people or maybe even 4.

Have fun!

Have you thought about a campervan? It will give you more flexibility than a car and you don't have to worry about accommodation. I did the trip last year in a camper from Travellers Auto Barn and it was just amazing. I drove with my friend in a Chubby Camper down the East Coast from Cairns to Sydney and we really enjoyed our time. Just have a look on their website for the prices...
I just hope you still have some time before your trip, with the floods the East Coast wouldn't be my favourite place to travel at the moment...

Thanks for your help Mike! We've had a look at the websites... can you only book 11months or less in advance?x

We've got loads of time before we go thankfully! We're going beginning of December this year for 6 weeks. Feel bad for the people affected by the floods though, me and my friend have both got family in the areas affected :(
We have thought about a campervan but as its just the two of us we'll probably stay in hostels as we want to meet and talk to others like ourselves, especially around Christmas time! More the merrier! All depends on budget aswell really, we're fairly open to all suggestions at the moment to make sure we get the best out of everything! x
