Travel Forums Europe Train or car to Germany??

My husband & I are planning to visit Amsterdam in April and we are considering a little day trip to the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. I looked at Eurorail and round trip fares from Amsterdam to Hanover/Wolfsburg would cost us 124 euro per person, 248 both. We're wondering if renting a car would be a cheaper alternative besides offering us more mobility. What would you suggest?

I think its cheaper to rent a car (about 100 € for a day (certainly depends on the car you choose))! But the distance from Amsterdam to Wolfsburg is about 460 km and it takes by car nearly as long as by train also travelling there by train is less stressful than by car! I think if you plan to stay some hours in Hannover during that day trip you should use the train, because with a car you have to find a car-park in the inner city and that is not as easy as going out of the train at the railway station and just walk into the city centre!
But if you want to drive not the direct way to Wolfsburg and look at some other worth seeing things along that route, you should take a car and a car cost less than a railway ticket! So if you would like to take a cheap trip to Wolfsburg, i would prefer a car!

I hope this will help you! And enjoy your trip!

Greetings Stefan

If you go by train, you should book in advance to get a better price. As well, "Deutsche Bahn" has special night trains that are really cheap.
At the homepage you can find out more about the offers from "Deutsche Bahn".

Enjoy your trip.
