Hello I was hoping u can help me.

I am thinking about working/travelling abroad (probably Spain) during the summer vacation 2004.

Do u have any advice how I can go about this?

Any comments about ur experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Do u think its safe 2 go alone?

Suzi x.

Hi Suzi, it's George from Inverness, Scotland here. I was directed by email to answer your query but this seems a mistake as you mention Spain. Hope I'm right on this

Hi Suzi, my brother moved to Spain in September. Apparently you need some sort of national insurance number before you can even apply for a job. So much for European Community huh?

He went to an agency but in the end the employer needed him and sort things out as far as the national insurace is concerned.
He got his first job working for a call centre and the money is quite good, well he speaks english, italian and spanish.

I am planning to go to Spain myself but I'd rather live in Barcellona, my bro lives in Madrid.

You travel alone? if you are going to Madrid let me know, might get in touch with my bro. ciao

I also wanted to live in Spain for the summer of 2004. Since I'm limited on funds I decided to find an au pair job. I have found one and will be living near Barcelona for 3 months this summer. I think being an au pair is a great opportunity for people to travel and experience different cultures. Especially since I believe that the only true way to experience a different culture or place is to live there. If you have any interest in spending time with children I would suggest looking into it! Most of the time youd don't need to have much previous child care experience and the stipend you receive covers all your costs of living. Good Luck!

Hi all, just letting you know I updated the thread country to "Spain". It seems that it was Scotland, probably because of its proximity in the dropdown box to Spain. This will mean those persons registered as travel helpers for Spain will be notified, instead of the Scottish travel helpers.

Summer jobs in Spain are quite popular. From Holland for example, I know a lot of people travel to Costa del Sol (lloret de mar etc) for the summer and work in bars, nightclubs etc. These are usually dutch bars and nightclubs though....yes, it's sad, I know :)

If you speak spanish it is going to be much easier of course to find any kind of job after just showing up in Spain. There are also quite a few organizations that help with finding jobs (already from your home country), especially the aupair type as Leah suggests.

I don't think travelling alone would give any more problems that walking around any city in the world alone. You have to be sensible, especially in places you don't know. Generally speaking though, I would imagine you would not be alone after just a few days.... that's how it usually works when travelling by yourself :)
