No, it's free. (Btw, note that as a non-resident, you actually have to be in Australia before you can apply for one.)

Like Sander said it's free - visit www.ato.gov.au to apply and they'll send you your TFN by post (so you need an address in Australia before you can apply)
Apply asap if you're going to need it, cos it will take some time to arrive
If your TFN arrives by post, how do you go about this if you're going to be travelling around and don't know exactly what hostel/city you'll be in when it's likely to get posted to you?

I don't know if I am in the right thread or not for my question. But anyways, how do you do your income taxes for the year that I will be working in Australia? Will I need to pick up forms while there before travelling back home to Canada?
The ATO website says you will get it within 28 days. Mine took something like that to arrive.
