Travel Forums General Talk am i taking on too much?

in august i will be heading off to south-east asia all by myself for around 6-8 months. i plan to visit thailand, myanmar, laos, vietnam, cambodia, malaysia and indonesia. this will be the first time that i've travelled by myself and i was wondering if maybe i was taking on too much? i have travelled a fair amount before, but always with at least one friend. this time around i want to go solo and just see what happens. am i biting off more than i can chew, particularly with regards to myanmar, vietnam, laos and cambodia? is it realistic to travel solo in these countries especially as it will be my first solo trip? cheers, joey

Hi Joey

I definitely think you will have enough time in 6-8 months. I suppose it depends on how much of each country you want to cover. Not that I'm basing this answer on real-life experience - no - but I am in the throes of researching a RTW trip and I will be visiting each of those destinations hopefully and doing it in about half the time you are planning to.....

Does that help? I dunno....

Joey - Yup, no problems solo in any of those places, and certainly if your going to stick to the more, urm, civilized and touristy/explored areas. SEA and Thailand in particular gets so many backpackers and solo tourists that you'll have no problems in even generally off the beaten track places. basically, if you start with Thailand, and then do Vietnam/Laos etc you'll be fine. The Phillines will be the elast touristy, but as it's the least connected to your other destinations, it's easier to do towards the end etc when you already have a few months experience. Myanmar is a bit different (it is for any tourist, not just first time solo travellers), but providing you aren't a complete idiot, do things you shouldn't or go to places you shouldn't and are not someone who instantly manages attracts trouble, you should be fine throughout.

I was just wondering : are you doing much of that travel over land? What flights are you planning on taking?

gelli, cheers! i dont think i attract trouble cos im fairly quiet and keep myself to myself! cant wait to get going now, its so exciting!

samsara, i plan to do almost all of the trip overland. i will have to fly into burma if i decide to go there, and i plan to fly from vientiane in laos to hanoi. and if i decide to go to bali then that would be a flight as well... planned before i leave i guess. i really want to experience the difference between each country and reckon it would be best to do this by crossing overland when possible.

cheers for the replies, joey

Hey Joey;)
I reckon you'll be fine by yourself.I was travelling by myself too for 7 months (Singapore,Australia,Hawaii,Los Angeles) and I did great so I'm pretty sure you'll be fine as well. And if you're staying in hostels or somekind I'm sure you'll meet heaps of other people and make great friends as well.
Have a great time!
Best wishes,Minna
