I want to move to the UK. I'm 23, I have lived in Australia my whole life and have never been overseas. I am both an Australian and British citizen and am interested to know your thoughts on the best place to live thats good to find work (not pub work, more retail or office) and relaxed. i don't want to live anywhere too hustling and bustling, but all suggestions are welcome.

I'm thinking cornwall - but have heard conflicting opinions.
Also any suggestions about what i need to do to be able to work over there would be welcome too

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!:)

Cornwall is a huge rural area, and if you are looking for office work you wont find many offices in Cornwall... or Devon...
Suggest you try Bristol or Exeter or Taunton, in the southwest, as you will have a better chance for finding job vacancies. Cornwall is great if you are a surfer or hiker, and I love it for walking my dog, but not the best place for office jobs! Take care

As a note the job situation in England is a lot worse than in Australia. I have 10 years of experience in my job and got a good job, in my kind of job, in Sydney within a week of arriving in Australia. When I got back to England I took me 3 and a half months. Not trying to scare you, but just to make sure you understand the economy is still suffering over here!

I live in Kent in the South East of England. I am 40 minutes from London on the train (although I dont work in London) about the same from the coast, and there are plenty of typically picturesque places to escape too where it is a bit quieter.

Unfortunately the quieter places in England are also the places where it will be tougher to get work. Cumbria is lovely, as is Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

Also try to Midlands and North – plenty of cities there with smaller town commutes not too far away

Bigmal - I have heard good things about living in Exeter. are there any other places you can suggest that i could possibly find work - i would even work in a pub if i had to.

Steve 79 - i have heard that the job crisis is a lot worse over there than it is here. Would you suggest moving to somewhere like Brighton to find work? I'm not really fussed, just don't want to live in the busy areas. i don't mind commuting, as long as its fairly straight forward.

Also, my partner is a Carpenter... is there much work for them over there at the moment?

Thanks guys

I think there is always a demand for manual labour so I would imagine your partner would be ok. Brighton is really nice, on the coast, but also not too far from London on the train and has a good feel about it.

I also like Liverpool, Bristol and I went to Uni in Sheffield which I think is a great city.

When are you think of moving over? x

Well we are going for a holiday to the UK this time next year. So probably after we get back, if we find somewhere that we really like, it would be good to move about 6 months after that. So we're probably looking at the start of 2013. (Savings permitted of course).

I met a girl the other day who was from sheffield, and of course she sang its praises. We might just have to check it out!

My boyfriend is a surfer, so anywhere by the coast would be good for him. i don't think he'll find much surf in England (??) but he'll at least have to get in for a dip every now and again just to keep himself sane!

I am so excited about the potential move, i have a serious case of cabin fever from being stuck here in Melbourne for so long!

If you can think of any other places to throw into the mix, that would be much appreciated! Thanks :)
