I'm nursing an injured shoulder, because I came off a motorbike yesterday. It's turned into a real item of interest to others. What injuries have you sustained whilst travelling ?

Last January in Killington, Vermont - Skiing Trip

I was sitting in the chair lift and had my arm draped over the back while I was talking to my brother...when we got to the top of the run, he lifted the bar, neither of us realising that my thumb was in the WRONG place! (i.e. directly undeneath the hinge!). My thumb was crushed as the bar came was underneath my glove obviously so I thought maybe it had come right off! I couldnt see....

there was lots of blood and the pain was excruciating!! i had to stick it into the snow until it was completely numb. The temp was -32 that day! so that helped....

I had to ski down the run to the Medical Centre......and spent the next few days out of it on painkillers and booze!

I'm left with a permanent scar as a reminder...

sprained an ankle falling off a swing in a childrens playground on the way home from a nightclub in Chicago totally my own fault but it was a great night

I've never really injured myself travelling (touch wood), but just before my first vacation to Europe I busted my knee and ended up on crutches. After hobbling around Spain for a few days, we decided to rent a wheelchair and I was pushed from here to there like a Queen. Although there's nothing scarier than being wheeled down one of those narrow streets in Torremolinos that run down the hillside.

Several times, a couple quite badly and a couple in places i really didn't need anything to happen, and a couple of really stupid things.

having said that, one of my very few talents is breaking bones (huge numbers of, normally mine), and i rarely go more than a few months without doing something, and as i travel so much, law of averages says that a chunk have to come during travel.

My current 'travel' injury is a relapse of a dodgy back/shoulder (collar bone really) injury, brought on by leg wrestling on the floor of the pub after the rugby (don't ask). And yes, i was ritually humiliated.

my back hurts too, Gelli... I also have a bruiseon my right knee. but I'm not sure that a few stops on the tube counts as travel, so I call it a sport injury

I'm another of those people that needs a personal ambulance. Just a few of mine are, hypothermia after falling into a fjord in Norway, spinal shock (paralised for two days, very scary) after roof fall in Australia, broken hand/foot after motorbike crash in Australia, broken toes, run over by car in Amsterdam and huge black leg after scary-beastie bite in Kazakstahn. Currently free from injury, so its only a matter of time!!

When I was 16 I was running with a friend in Rome (don't remember why) and I fell and hit my knee on the pavement. It turned out to be "water in the knee." My knee was swollen to about 5 times it's size and it hurt to move. I was limping for the rest of my trip....not fun! It took about 2 months to heal.

I did the classic and have the world's greatest scar to show for one of my gap years, I spent a month on the thai islands and of course mopeds were involved...
How was I to know about the invisible film of fine sand on that corner I took at about 60K's? resulting in a grusome gash on my knee and a near written off moped, the woman with the hawks eyes spotted it a mile off and started on the bent back in to shape basket and it spiralled out from there
at least i didn't hit the wall...
