I have been to Lake Atitlan before and stayed in Panajachel. My question is about other lakeside places to stay that forum members might like to recommend. And your reasons why you feel the way you do. Any suggestions? I'll be in the area late March and early April.

Hi Chandler
I am off to Guatemala next week and will be at Lake Attilan later in the same week. I will be staying at Hotel Regis, Panajachel.
I would be interested to know if you have stayed there or if anyone reading the forum has experience of this hotel. It seems quite expensive. I wanted somewhere repuitable as I am a single female traveller.

hi chandler,

when i was in the lake atitlan area (about a month ago) i stayed in santiago atitlan, as that is where my cousin is living. she lives in a basic cottage (most of their cottages are nicer though) on the property of the posada de santiago ( they are definitely on the expensive side, especially for guatemala, and a bit of a walk from the boat docks, but the property is big and beautiful and they have a restaurant with good food and the people are pretty friendly. i believe the posada also has some "budget" accommodation, although it's still not that cheap compaired to, say, hotel chi nim ya on the other side of town.

if it werent for my cousin living there (and therefore me being able to stay for free) i would not have spent the money to stay there. however, since that is the only place i stay in the lago de atitlan area, thought i'd pass it on. good luck and happy travels.

Be advised that December through March is high season in Guatemala and Central America and Holy Week (Semana Santa) is March 20 to March 26, which means all accomidations at Beaches, Lakes, Resort Areas and especially Antigua will be full of nationals on holiday, things will slow down the end of March and be advised April is the end of the dry season hot and dusty, in May the rains come and cool things down a bit. If anyone needs to reserve in Central america (except Semana Santa) I can provide you with leads if you message me. Panajachel on Lake Atitlan has dozens of hospedajes for low budget travelers ranging from grimy to really excellent, boats come and go all day across the Lake.
