If you are looking for spring or winter break from Ohio State (Columbus, Ohio), then you should go where the students all go--which is either Florida or Texas. In Florida the hot spots are Daytona Beach, Orlando,South Beach in Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Panama Beach. In Texas, the hot spot is South Padre Island. There are also spring break spots in California such as San Diego and Palm Springs, but these will cost more than the places I've already mentioned in Texas and Florida.

It can be difficult to find natural areas of interest during the winter in the USA because you also want warm weather. If you're willing to brave the cold, then I recommend the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Florida will be warm, but not especially natural!

Tough to get easily to the warm via bus/train without losing a huge chunk of your vacation time. But if you want to do it, and want to avoid the major college rush areas in Texas and Florida, you might try Louisiana or New Mexico. Very different climates, but both have a lot of wild beautiful areas with wildlife, views, and a chance to find some solitude.
