You'll need 4 days, there is a lot to see and do there. Public transportation is very good, with the light rail system available to you.

By all means see the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on the Mall, admission is free.

The Smithsonian on the Mall is actually about 12 buildings. In addition to the air and space museum (which some say is one of the most visited buildings in the world), other Smithsonian buildings include the natural history museum, the one that contains the minerals, and the one that contains the national archives (the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and an original Guggenheim Bible).

Other government buildings to visit are The White House, the Capitol Building, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, The Jefferson Memorial, and there are also monuments for Franklin Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, and to war veterans (Vietnam, Korea, WWII, US Civil War and WWI. Other places to visit are the Bureau of Printing and Engraving (where they print all the money), The FBI building, and the Arlington Cemetery.

To have fun in Washington, DC (and not just visit government buildings), visit the Georgetown portion of town, the Washington Fish Market down near the Jefferson Memorial (Potomac Bridge), and go to the shops and restaurants down Constitution Blvd from DuPont Circle.
