Three months in China

I'm about to get my airplane ticket for a summer in China. The length of that trip is 12 weeks.
So far I haven't found a very comprehensive guide to spending three months in China, perhaps because it is an extended visit. I'm arriving in Hong Kong early in May. One of the reasons I'm traveling there is to meet a friend in Fuzhou, but I will need to spend at least a month and a half on my own before meeting her.

The estimate cost per month I found was around $1500, for accommodations, food and travel. Is that realistic?

I would like to know about interesting places to visit for hiking and historical sight seeing and to hear of any other experiences as a long term visitor. The reason I'm staying so long is, first I have the time (perhaps not the money... hehe, I'll have to work hard for that one) and because the best air travel deal I found spanned that long. Once I meet my friend, I may have an easier time getting around; I'm sure she will think of a million things to do and places to go.

It's interesting to me to take both the beaten path and to stray away from it, so I'm open to wild ideas as well as the traditional places to go.

If anyone thinks I'm crazy doing this, let me know!
