Iran as a backpacker

Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East Iran as a backpacker

So, in about two weeks myself and a few friends are setting off to Iran. We've had many recommendations and tips from Iranians living abroad, but lack the backpacker point of view! As all our money needs to be in cash, I'd be interested in knowing how much money people reserved per day for travelling around and basic hotel accommodation. We'll cross the border by land from Turkey, and need to change money asap once on Iranian side. Is it safe, or are there scams to be aware of?

Also, very keen on hearing specific hotel recommendations in Esfahan and Shiraz.

Examples of prices would also be appreciated (such as a train journey from Tabriz to Tehran, short taxi rides, bottle of water, cup of tea at a tea house etc). There might also be a possibility of being invited to a friend's- friend's house- what would be appropriate/appreciated gift to take?

Thank you :)
