Hey guys! Me too I'm traveling alone to Australia in January 2013. I'm applying for a work and travel visa so I'll be doing some work while there to support my living. I would love to have a traveling buddy! I'm a 20-year-old girl from Helsinki, Finland. This is my gap year and I'm trying to make the most of it and see as much as possible. Anyway feel free to send me a message here so we can chat a little more if you have similar plans. Cheers, I'm really looking forward to hearing from you :)

Hey Sam,
I'm planning on looking a bit for jobs online before leaving, ive heard of and are pretty good sites but id rather apply in person when i get there. i have my smart serve here in Ontario, so im hoping to find a job waitressing, i'll have to get my RSA before applying for anything along those lines though.
What are you thinking of doing? And where are you starting off your travels?

Katelin :)

Make sure you visit Byron Bay which is a two hour drive from Brisbane, it's amazing :)! Stay at the arts factory hostel its really cool.

You shouldn't have any issues finding bar/waitress work in Brisbane, as there are new bars and cafes opening up all the time.

Hi all, Im very new to this! Im a 29 year old girl who has finally finished university and I want to see a bit of the world before I get a proper job and settle down.
I haven't booked anything yet (I know its late booking but I haven't had time to really plan anything yet) but I hope leave early February 2013 and travel through Australia, New Zealand and Thailand for about 4 months.
Ill be travelling alone so it would be great to meet up with some fellow travellers. Im not sure where to start my trip, I was thinking Hawaii, I know itll be expensive but I think it will ease me into travelling alone until I settle into the travellers lifestyle and meet some people to join up with.
So any piece of advice would be greatly appreciated and I hope to meet some of you along the way! Also I really want to do as much diving as possible while Im away so any tips on that would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone could give me a rough estimate of how much cash I would need for say 1 week in Hawaii (maybe), 6 weeks in Australia, 3 weeks in New Zealand and 6 weeks in Thailand.

Polly: All of the following figures are extremely open to interpretation; you can do things more frugally, but you can also blow through thrice this amount without trying hard. Depends on your travel style, types of local transport (including how frequently you use them), if you do many tours and activities, etc. These particular guesstimates are based on staying in dorm rooms in decent quality hostels (or private rooms in good quality guesthouses for Thailand), buying supermarket food to cook your own meals (or eating out cheaply in Thailand (mix of cheap restaurants and out on the street)), and travelling to next destinations by public transport no more than twice a week.
~AUD $3500 (~€2900) for 6 weeks Australia, NZD $1700 (~€1100) for 3 weeks New Zealand, and ~THB 16,000 (~€1550) for 6 weeks Thailand. No idea for Hawaii, but I'd guesstimate USD $100/day minimum.

Thanks for the information, thats really helpful. Yeah sorry I really should have been a bit more clear but I do plan to do it as cheap as possible: dorms, cook myself, etc. I do want to do as much trips as I can afford so Ill have to factor in quite a bit more for that. Having a rough idea of what Ill spend is a great help though :)
