On Her Own in Brazil-Paraguay-Argentina

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean On Her Own in Brazil-Paraguay-Argentina

I'm planning to spend some time in Belo Horizonte, Brazil volunteering and studying Portuguese (approx. 2 1/2 mo.) where I have friends. Then for about 6 weeks I plan to hit the road to Argentina, Paraguay and other parts of Brazil on my own (probably close to Belo-the big cities I'll be with friends). My concern is safety for women on their own in these countries. I'd like to hear recent experiences of female travellers to these countries. I've been to Bolivia and Mexico, but these countries seem to be very different.

I have just been to argentina, uruguay and paraguay. I havn't been to brazil other than the Pantanal, but know something about the other countries. I have also been travelling alone as a girl, and have not really had much trouble at all. Yes, they do say things to you on the street and will be courios, but nothing to worry about. I have been walking alone at night in most cities as well, taking the same precautions as I would have if I was travelling with someone.
Normally south american girls will be travelling with their boyfriends, and they will ask you where he is. My reply has been that he is comming down in a few days (a lie of course) and then they won't bother you anymore.

All fine, enjoy and for sure you will find fellow travellers as you go along.

Idz ;)

I travelled round Brazil Argentina and Paraguay on my own (I am a girl!) and had no problems. be sensible, and you should be safe. The people are friendly, but dont accept lifts from stangers! Common sense is the best protection! I had a great time!

Yes, about boyfriends, ALWAYS say you have one, always say he is joining you in a couple of days. If necessary, say you are engaged, if people ask about rings, say you were scared to loose it so took it off and left it at home. It is very precious to you as you love ur bf etc and didnt want to do it. This usually works as a good deterrent.... although one time a particularly persistent brazilian coudlnt understand this and tried to stick his tongue in my ear. yuck! He was nice though and after a blunt calling to order backed off and left me alone.
