Just wondering how safe it is to drive in Merida and around the Yucatan. I'm not talking about Banditos here. I just mean is the driving in and around Merida maniacal like in Mexico City?

Car rental in Yucatan?
I found the Merida area very quiet as roads go. Mexico has a very comprehensive bus service for getting around.
As to Bandidos, yes there are some druggies about but you are more likely to be stopped by armed soldiers checking your vehicle. One night trip, our bus was stopped 12 times within about two miles (not an exaggeration).
Note. Historic sites and museums are usually free on Sundays.
